Store Credit vs. Amount Discounts: What’s the difference?
If you’re new to Shopify store credit, you may wonder how store credit is different from a points-based amount discount. Both reward types allow customers to redeem rewards using points, but they work differently when applied to orders.
Both reward types allow customers to redeem rewards based on the number of points they have, and both can be configured using fixed values or increments. However, they differ in how rewards are stored and used.
What Is Store Credit?
Store credit is a monetary balance stored directly in a customer’s Shopify account. When a customer redeems points for store credit, the amount is saved to their account and can be used across multiple orders until the balance is fully spent or expires.

What Is a Points-Based Amount Discount?
A points-based amount discount allows customers to redeem points for a one-time discount applied to an order. Each redemption creates a separate reward that is typically used on a single order.

Which One Should You Use?
Store credit is a good choice if you want to offer flexible rewards that customers can use over time. Points-based amount discounts are better suited for fixed, one-time rewards with clear redemption values.
Many merchants use both reward types together to balance flexibility and control in their loyalty program.
