What you don’t need on day one
When launching a loyalty program, especially if you’re new to loyalty or need to launch quickly, it’s easy to feel like you need to enable every feature right away. In reality, you don’t. This guide explains what’s essential on day one and what can wait, so you can launch with confidence without overcomplicating your setup.
Start with the basics
At a minimum, a loyalty program only needs two things:
- Ways to Earn Points
- Ways to Redeem Points
For most stores, this usually starts with a simple earning action like placing an order (and optionally signing up for an account) paired with basic rewards such as a discount or store credit. These components create the core earn → redeem loop and are enough to get your program live and working for customers.

What can wait until later
Many features are powerful, but not required at launch. You don’t need to enable all earning actions or advanced features on day one, such as:
- VIP tiers
- Limited-time offers
- Additional earning actions beyond your core actions
These options can be often added once your core program is live and you’ve seen how customers interact with it.
Why starting simple helps
Launching with a simple setup helps you:
- Avoid confusing customers
- Reduce setup mistakes
- Test your program more easily
- Adjust point values based on real customer behavior
You can always expand your loyalty program over time as your store grows and your goals become clearer.
Some tips for your launch
- Avoid changing point values too frequently right after launch to prevent confusion.
- Document your initial setup so future changes are easier to track.
- Make sure customers can actually discover your loyalty program through the widget or loyalty page.
- Test earning and redemption actions using a logged-in test account to ensure everything works as expected.
A loyalty program doesn’t need to be complex to be effective. Start simple, then build as you learn.
